iB 7 Technology Project 2- Catch Me If You Can

Article by Sivran MYP7
Taken from AXIS International Vol. 1, 17th OCT 2008

It was a MYP 7 project that we did for I.C.T.

There were four groups and each group was assigned to a different place in Fairview International School. The places were the canteen, the Fairwalk, the bookshop and the i.B. campus.
We investigated the problems and thought of solutions. We took pictures of these problems with a digital camera.
We presented our projects to Mr. and Mrs. Chian (the chairman and the chairman's wife), Mr. Michael and Ms. Chew and we did our presentation according to our research. -SIVRAN MYP7

GROUP 1: (i.B. campus)
Yen, HanLin, Owin, Sirjan

GROUP 2: (Bookshop)
Woan Jinq, Cathy, Cheng Yue

GROUP 3: (Washrooms)
Helena, Desianne, Celine and Elisa

GROUP 4: (Fairwalk)
Sivran, Marcus, Benjamin, Zain

AS A TEACHER MYSELF,
I was proud of what these students were capable of achieving.

The learning objectives were simple- to learn how to capture images using digital camera and to be able to insert graphics on a slide. Gave it a twist and turn, and they could learn more than that.

The only thing I wanted them to remember was- you can always talk the talk, but you must also learn to walk the walk.

That was why I invited our chairman (and his wife) to come and watched the students' presentation. I wanted the students to realise that they were heard. And they were doing it for a right purpose, to voice out their opinions and at the same time think before they act.

"I simply enjoyed the presentation. It was amazing." said Mrs. Chian after the presentation.

"Use a more dimensional way of thinking. Use the Six Thinking Hats." adviced Mr. Chian.

YOU MAY BE DISAPPOINTED IF YOU FAIL,
BUT YOU ARE DOOMED IF YOU DON'T TRY.
-Beverly Sills

Looking forward to your next performance, students.

Kojaya Hostel Life- Birthday Party!!

l
Date: 09 Oct 2008
Venue: Kojaya Apartment Putri 3-6
Organizer: Seamus Event Management Team
(Jason, Leo, James, ChangSun, Yu Xu, Shao Wei, Moon, Kohei, Ms. Chew, Ms. Marieann & Ms. Fernandez)
Objectives:
- to celebrate Tim (everyone's favourite Fairview boy from 3A)'s birthday
- to bring hostel students and teachers closer together

Preparation started at 1:45pm, right after school.

Moon (our ex-hostel student) was invited and he was here helping out!

Although Yu Xu is not our hostel student, he was a good helper too. Look at how he pumped the balloons. COOL. He exploded almost half of our balloons. Anyway, thanks for coming to help! We welcome you to revisit us again whenever you are free.

Shao Wei was responsible for looking after Yu Xu, to stop him from further exploding our balloons. He failed.

Cooking Team 1 was led by the wonderfulicious James. We all thought that he should stop studying and went straight into the catering line. Damn, he was a superb cook!

Look at the menu: fried bee hoon with hot dogs (5 out of 5), fried rice with tuna (taste-buds tantalizing), fried chicken meat balls (perfect), french fries (finger licking good), Domino's Pizza and McDonalds' fried chickens (erm... we ordered these).

His co-chefs were Jason and Leo. James is from Taiwan and Jason+Leo are from China. Who cares about those silly politics now.

Cooking Team 2 was led by the fantastic wonderwoman Ms. Marieann. Assisted by Ms. Chew the dishwasher and Ms. Fernandez the chatterbox, she and her team contributed Chicken Curry (my god, 120% better than Pelita's), mango salads, and barley drinks.

Well, we had the honour of having Chang Sun the baby sitter with us also. He did look after the kids, Tim & Hebe, who are 11 and 8. With Chang Sun's baby face, the three of them did look like a cute kid gang.

Cookings and preparations completed at around 6:30pm. And our honourable guests started arriving. Welcome Ms. Sandhya our new teacher!

Mr. Aldrin from the Philipines and our teachers all the way from India! We hope they like our local foods.

And our new favourites, Mr. Daniel and Ms. Abigail, a lovely couple. Hey, we 'shamefully' invite you both to join our Corruptors' Night every Wednesday (shameful because you know how dirty our talks can be and how much we've ruined Malaysia's image. Malaysia Boleh)!

Foods, drinks, cakes, candles, birthday wishes. We had them all.

And it seems like everyone's having so much fun. Smiling faces all around. Thanks to the delicious Secret Recipe cakes which costed us RM150.

A birthday party is meaningless without a clown. And the clown of the day was undoubtedly this Japanese guy. The always adorable born-to-be comedian Kohei Nakashima.

This birthday party and hostel gathering can never be a success without the help of these people:

(a) First and foremost, the students.
- Thank you Leo and Jason (who have only RM400 left in their bank account and they need to survive to the end of the month) for voluntarily paying the extra RM50 for the cakes. And those lovely gifts you bought for the kids.
- Thank you James for all the foods. You are a magnificent cook. And you are a magnificent leader. Plus you are a fantastic road guide.
- Thank you Chang Sun (our photographer), Shao Wei and Yu Xu for the awkward computerised robotic reading lady voice and all the help. That was wicked but fun. Sorry Yu Xu you had to use chopsticks to eat your cakes because we ran out of utensils. Guys, Please buy your badminton rackets asap.
- Thank you Kousalya for the sweet birthday card you made and for helping to wash the dishes.
- Thank you Adit and Rizal for your understandings. Well at least tonight you don't need to eat Instant Noodles anymore.
- Thank you Kohei for all the stupid entertainments. Thank you for censoring your language in front of the small kids.

(b) Then, Ms. Marieann, Ms. Chew, Ms. Fernandez and all the teachers who came and helped.
- Marieann, thanks for your kindness of lending your car to fetch the students home.
- Fernandez, you didn't make the eggs explode! Great!
- Chew, your barley was way fantastic. It was an artpiece.
- Teachers, thanks for coming. Really. The students loved your company so much.

(c) Of course, thank you Ms. Nava. THANKKKKKKKK youuuuuuuuuuuuu. Kiss Kiss Hug Hug.
We saw you coming back to Kojaya at around 9:30pm. Work?

(d) Thank you GOD, whoever you are.

Guys, hard works paid off. It was a great great great great success.

O Level's coming next week. Good Luck.

10:30pm. Everything's back to normal. Living room's tidied up. Kitchen's cleaned.

Next, let's plan a trip. Shall we?

IB 7 Technology Project 1- 'Business From A Scratch'

Learning Objectives:
-to create a PowerPoint slide show (with text) using design templates
-to select and u
se slide transition and animation effects

(1) It was our first lesson, our first time meeting each other and we kicked off with two engaging icebreakers (at the beginning of the lesson), after which we got to know each other even more and better. It was a good sign and a promising start of the term.

(2) Students were excited when I took out a huge roll of toilet paper from my bag. The toilet paper was such an attention getter. I handed the toiler paper roll to the students and told them to take some, between 3 and 8 squares. Not knowing what the toilet paper was for, most of them were super greedy and went for the maximum. A few were cautious and took as little as possible.

(3) I then explained to them that each and every one of them was going to start their own company. They were given 3 minutes to think and to consider. I drew a T-chart on the board for them to write down their company name together with a word to describe their company. These students were creative and innovative.
Some interesting examples were:
Potatohead (by Hercules/Sivran) - Potatoes
Click! (by Dionysus/Helena) - Photoshop
Hermes' Hut (by Hermes/Elisa) - Souvenirs
CR7 (by Apollo/Zain) - Sportswear

(4) And to start a business, they needed foundation. The toilet paper squares they took, hence, would be their fund to start their company. It was, literally, their 'money'. I had the class monitor recorded down the amount of 'money' each student had.

(5) I then multiplied the number of toilet paper squares each student took with 2. Each student
would then need to come up with that certain amount of words (verbs, adjectives, nouns and etc) to describe their company. I gave them a plain paper to draw a mind map.

(6) After I discussed with them the relevance and suitability of design templates to the content of their presentation, students chose their respective design templates which I downloaded from the internet. With guidance, they had to create a PowerPoint Presentation (3 slides) to describe and to promote their company.

(7) The first slide included their company name, their User-ID and their name. On the second slide, they inserted all the words and phrases they used to describe their company. They also had an extra slide to give any additional information which was the third slide.

(8) They all did a marvelous job. All the PowerPoint Slide Show were beautifully and skillfully completed. Many of them showed extra knowledge and gave extra hard work in finishing their work. Not forgetting some really helpful students who lent their friends their helping hands!

(9) In addition, some students further impressed me when they presented their work. Many of them practiced at home and results showed. They also tactfully answered their friends' questions during Q&A session. Spectacular!

COMING UP...
- Project: Catch Me If You Can! Students work in groups to discuss about the school and its compound. They will take photos, learn to insert graphics in PowerPoint and create a PowerPoint Slide Show to present their findings and solutions.
- Project: TIME MAGAZINE- Person of the Year 2008
